Smugglers Notch, Vermont (9/21/03)

After a beautiful drive across Canada we arrived at Smugglers Notch Resort on Sept. 21, 2003 for a 3 week stay. When we first arrived the leaves were just starting to change but by the end of our stay they were in their full glory. Smugglers Notch Resort is a large ski resort which covers a large area. We spent the three weeks in three different condos all of which were very nice. We enjoyed several resort activities as well as taking several day trips all over the area.

Fall in Vermont

We enjoyed the Stowe Oktoberfest during our first weekend in the area.

We also enjoyed a visit to the Trapp family lodge which is located in the area where the Von Traap family from the "Sound of Music settled after leaving Austria. This area is very similar to the scenery in Austria. Many of the family members are buried in the family cemetery which is on the property.

A tour of the Ben & Jerry Ice Cream factory was very interesting and ended with sampling some great ice cream.

A couple of our day trips took us back to Burlington, Vt. to enjoy a boat ride across Lake Champlain and the shopping at at the Historic Church Street Marketplace, a quirky and hip eight-block, cobblestone pedestrian-only promenade replete with shops, boutiques, cafes, restaurants, bookstores, and more. Adjacent to Church Street is the Burlington Town Center, an indoor mall featuring 48 stores that offer everything under the sun.

Another day trip took us around the northern end of Lake Champlain over to Lake Placid, New York where we enjoyed the beautiful downtown area, some Winter Olympic sites and more beautiful scenery.

We discovered several covered bridges during our trips around New England.

During our third week we took an overnight trip to Bar Harbor, Maine where we enjoyed visiting the beautiful downtown area, marina and a delicious fresh lobster dinner.
